Our Mission

The Organization of Independent Artists is a non-profit arts organization [verified under section 501(c)-(3)] founded by Warren Tanner and other artists in 1976 to expand and enrich the exhibitions of art in public and alternative spaces in the New York Metropolitan area. Over the past 30 years, OIA has pursued its mission of providing emerging, mid-career and unaffiliated artists with opportunities to exhibit in an array of venues.

OIA provides regular public art exhibitions through open and juried shows—regional, national, and international—and helps to enrich the community with our artist-curated exhibitions in public and alternative spaces throughout New York City. Free from commercial gallery pressures, the artists determine the kind of work exhibited and the way it is shown. With these programs OIA brings the visual arts to thousands of viewers, making quality art accessible to new audiences.
